Morris Winchevsky School History
The Morris Winchevsky School was founded in 1928 by members of the United Jewish People’s Order (UJPO). It was named after the Lithuanian poet Morris Winchevsky whose visionary poetry, imagining futures of freedom and justice, was recited at many of the labour movement’s marches and meetings.
Winchevsky was very active in workers’ movements in Eastern Europe, England, and the United States and the school’s many generations of graduates continue in his footsteps, working for social justice across many movements. The Winchevsky School was originally located in the Christie and Bloor area. It then moved to the site of the Morris Winchevsky Centre in the Bathurst and Lawrence Area but in 2011 it returned downtown to its current location – the 918 Bathurst Centre.
