The Morris Winchevsky School is a secular Sunday Jewish School, focused on social justice. Programs range from pre-school to B’Mitzvah (Grades 7/8). Our experiential curriculum explores Jewishness as a civilization of rich cultures and diverse traditions.

Educators are responsible for designing experiential lesson plans each week, in consultation with the Education Director and for facilitating them on Sunday mornings. Educators are supported with a detailed curriculum, archives and a database of historical and cultural content, multimedia, and secular practice guidelines. Each lesson is also rooted in principles of social justice from a decolonial, social justice-focused framework. Educators are responsible for delivering activities at the Shule’s holiday celebrations, including Sukkot, Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat and Purim.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Weekly design of an experiential lesson plan in consultation with the Education Director

  • Implementation of the lesson plan on Sunday mornings

  • Supervision of a Teacher’s Assistant(s) during Sunday morning lessons

  • Supervision of children during Snack Time.

  • Participation in periodic professional development activities and team meetings, as necessary

  • Preparation for and participation in special events and holidays

Successful Candidates will have:

  • Experience with teaching, facilitation and/or program leadership with the relevant age range

  • Background in experiential education

  • Background in Jewish history, culture & holidays

  • Understanding of a progressive secular Jewish philosophy

  • Creative, child-centered approach to education

  • Yiddish, Hebrew, and/or Ladino an asset (not a requirement)

  • Artistic ability a plus (e.g. music, drama, new media, other arts-based activities)

  • Creative, enthusiastic, energetic attitude.

This is a permanent part-time position.

Compensation is based on seniority with a baseline of $165/week.

Shule Assistant

Location: Downtown Toronto (Annex)

The Morris Winchevsky School is a secular Sunday Jewish School, focused on social justice. Programs range from pre-school to B’Mitzvah (Grades 7/8). Our experiential curriculum explores Jewishness as a civilization of rich cultures and diverse traditions.

The Shule Assistant is accountable to the Education Director and the Executive Director of the Morris Winchevsky Shule. The Morris Winchevsky Shule is accountable to the Shule Advisory Committee and the MWS Board.

Responsibilities:

  • Setting up the Shule ahead of classes starting by setting up the Shule Sandwich Board, the snack area, the kitchen for snack prep, and assistance with classroom set up when needed by Educators.
  • Greeting of families during drop off and pick up and assisting students with COVID sanitation, masks, etc.
  • Purchasing snack supplies ahead of Sunday mornings
  • Setting up snack and delivering to students during the striated snack times.
  • Cleaning up after snack and organizing the dishes/supplies after clean up.
  • Assisting with prep for Holiday celebrations
  • Purchase of supplies and food for holiday celebrations
  • Setting up and maintaining snack areas during holiday celebrations.
  • Assisting the Education Director with an average of one (1) hour per week outside of Sunday hours. These tasks will be scheduled in consultation with the Education Director and may include, but are not limited to: holiday event preparation, B’Mitzvah ceremony planning, coordination of B’Mitzvah parent meetings, correspondence with parents, teaching assistants, and educators, and coordinating special guests for Sunday classes.
  • The Shule Assistant is expected to remain available for some hours extending until the B’Mitzvah ceremony in June (exact date TBD).
  • On rare occasions, the Shule Assistant may be asked to assume the responsibilities of the Education Director in the event the Director is unable to attend Sunday classes in person and will be compensated $100.

This is a permanent part-time position.

Hours of employment: 5 hours per work week: snack duties 9:30am-1pm, required shopping, 1 hour assisting the Education Director throughout the week.

Remuneration: $25 per hour to be invoiced on a monthly basis (invoice template provided)
