Beginner’s Yiddish: 8-week course

As part of our centennial year, UJPO is offering exciting new Yiddish language courses.

Beginner's Yiddish, taught by educator and scholar Caleb Sher, will explore the fundamentals of Yiddish conversation and grammar in a friendly and communication-oriented environment. By the end of the course, students will have the skills they need to carry on basic conversations, to tackle beginner-level texts in the Yiddish alef-beys, and to begin exploring the wide world of Yiddish-language materials available online.

Participants are required to have a basic knowledge of the Yiddish/Hebrew alphabet before taking the course. If you aren't familiar yet with the letters you can learn online in a few hours! 

Beginner's Yiddish

When: Wednesday evenings, March 11 –May 6, 7 – 9:00pm, (skipping Wed, Apr. 1)

Where: First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, 473 Oakwood Ave.

Price: 8-week course: $200 for UJPO members, $240 for non-members 

Caleb Sher is a PhD student at the Centre for Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto, where they focus on interwar secular Yiddish-language education in Eastern Europe, particularly on the printed matter (textbooks, children's literature, laboratory guides, etc.) that were produced for these school systems. They were previously the senior fellow in bibliography at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA, where they helped lead educational programs for students of all ages.
