Yiddish Theatre Reading Group: 8-week course

As part of our centennial year, UJPO is offering exciting new Yiddish language courses.

Led by experienced Yiddish educator and theatre expert Sasha Hoffman, our Yiddish Reading Group offers fun weekly classes for participants with solid Yiddish reading and comprehension skills. Participants will read through a play by Kadie Molodowsky (Ale fentster tsu der zun) over 8 weeks, "acting" different roles. Sasha will provide guidance, and we'll review grammar and vocabulary as we read. The course will culminate in a public, casual reading at the legendary Free Times café.

Prerequisite: Good Yiddish reading comprehension abilities.

Sasha Hoffman is a Yiddish teacher and a Red Seal carpenter. Prior to pursuing carpentry, Sasha taught Yiddish language and culture courses at the University of Michigan, University of Toronto, and was a community organizer. Sasha holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan, with a dissertation entitled “The Artist and the Folk: Humor, Politics and Subjectivity in the work of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Sholem Aleichem, and Mordkhe Spector” (2012).

Yiddish Reading Group

When: Sunday afternoons, March 15 – May 3 (skipping Easter Sunday) 

& 1 event at Free Times Cafe, TBA

Price: 8-week course: $200 for UJPO members, $240 for non-members
