Join UJPO’s drop-in singing group, led by the fab local musicians, Hartley Wynberg and Shifra Cooper, for a night of Yiddish, English, and Hebrew tunes that you can zing along with. Informal, uninhibited, and loads of fun. This month the Zingers return to Free Times Cafe.

Latkes and Light: A Chanukah Delight

Join the Morris Winchevsky School and the United Jewish People’s Order for  a secular celebration of Chanukah. This family-friendly event features a Chanukah Shpiel (play), Candle Lighting, Chanukah Games & Crafts, Dreydls & Gelt, and, of course, Latkes & Sufgniot (doughnuts). Hot and cold beverages will also be served — potluck lunch.

Journalist Ellin Bessner, author of Double Threat: Canadian Jews, the Military, and World War II, will speak about Jews — outlawed because of their union organizing and affiliations with the Communist Party and the broader Left — who fought against Hitler as Canadians and helped to rescue the survivors of the Jews of Europe.

Community Sukkes/Sukkot Celebration

Join the Morris Winchevsky School in a celebration of Sukkes/Sukkot. Help us decorate the sukkah, sing and listen to stories around the fire in Dufferin Grove Park, and more! Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket. We’ll provide hot cocoa and cider.

Join us for our community observances of Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur for the traditional shofar blowing, readings, and poetry. On Rosh Hashonah we bring in the Jewish New Year with apples and honey cake. Both days feature Yiddish, Hebrew, and English music led by well-known Toronto musicians — David Wall (vocals) and Marilyn Lerner (piano) — including David Wall’s haunting rendition of the Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur.

Roz Usiskin and Harriet Zaidman will be speaking at the Winchevsky Centre on the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919. Both speakers have family connections to the strikers. Roz Usiskin’s father, Joseph, was a strike participant whose archival documentation states “...someday, [a] historian may look into my archives as a record of our history.”...Joseph Wolodarsky. Harriet Zaidman’s family members were Winnipeg workers affected greatly by the strike. They are depicted in her novel, City on Strike.

Creative Camp at Naivelt
